A dental hygiene assessment establishes baseline information of an individuals current oral health and overall health status. During this time we also provide an intra and extra oral exam to identify an possible abnormalities. This data allows us to create an individualized oral health care plan which is aimed at disease prevention and health promotion.
Professional scaling and root planning is instrumental in removing bacteria biofilms (plaque & calculus) above and below the gum line that can contribute to periodontal disease (gum and bone disease), tooth decay, and tooth loss. Generally, preventive dental debridement is recommended every three months for elders living in long term care, specifically those who face medical, physical and/or cognitive challenges and consequently, have challenges with effective daily oral care.
Fluoride varnish application is a safe and evidence based treatment to help in arrest and prevent dental decay and hypersensitivity. The recommendation of other therapeutic products and treatments may also be necessary to better manage oral disease.
Silver diamine fluoirde (SDF) is a topical medication to help treat and prevent dental decay and relieve dental hypersensitivity. SDF is especially effective in managing dental decay in elders unable to undergo invasive dental procedures.
Interim stabilization therapy (IST) is a temporary restorative procedure that is a therapeutic intervention used to free an individual from tooth pain and prevent further tooth decay until it can be addressed by a dentist. IST helps to arrests dental decay through a therapeutic release of fluoride. The procedure is non-invasive and does not require anesthetic.
